The idea of a cutting away the nail can turn a lot of people off to what is actually a safe and extremely helpful procedure. When you have an ingrown toenail, your hard nail tissue is growing into and pinching or piercing your skin. Sometimes the edge of your nail can be lifted up above the skin, but many times that either isn’t possible or it isn’t enough to relieve the discomfort.
Your best option for relief then becomes cutting out the offending edge. Your toe is numbed for this, so you don’t feel any pain. The whole procedure is quick and creates immediate relief for your ingrown nail discomfort. There are two ways to approach removing an ingrown nail: partial or complete.
A partial nail removal is the more common treatment, and it has a high success rate. It removes the edges that are ingrown, without disturbing the nail bed. Often the nail is then chemically treated to prevent the edge from growing back and into the skin again. If you have an infection from your condition, we’ll also treat it with antibiotics at this time.
A total nail removal surgically excises the entire toenail. This can be a temporary or permanent measure. Sometimes removing the damaged tissue can allow the nail to grow back straight. Other times, however, the nail continues to cause problems, so permanently stunting its growth prevents it from ingrowing again. It’s also harmless for your toe. Your digit will continue to function normally, whether or not your nail is intact.
Removing an ingrown toenail isn’t as frightening as some people seem to believe. If you’re suffering with nail pain, this may be your best bet for relief.
