It helps reduce health risks like heart disease and high blood pressure, improves blood flow, boosts your immune system, strengthens muscles, protects against loss of bone mass, helps you maintain a healthy weight, and more!
Of course, if you’re exercising when you’re elderly, just as important as exercising itself, is doing so safely! After all, you want to stay healthy, not get hurt! So, before you head outside or to the gym, make sure your doctor gives the go ahead, and that you have the right equipment – including the right shoes – for the activity. Do a proper warm up as well as stretches for flexibility. Choose lower impact options like walking, tai chi, or those YMCA classes we mentioned above as these are the best choices to reduce risk of injury. Finally, start slowly and gradually build upon your fitness routine. You never want to do too much too soon.
