How high is your risk for fungal toenails?

Comments (0)

old athletic shoesDon’t let the name fool you—there is nothing fun about fungus. Once it takes hold it doesn’t like to let go and if it gets under your nails, well that’s when things get ugly. Fungal toenails can become thick, yellow or brownish, crumbly, brittle, and even omit a foul odor—yuck!  So how high is your risk that fungi will find you? Test your knowledge and see if you’re more likely to be fungi-free, or a fungi friend.

  1. Do you have sweaty feet?
  2. Do you wear the same shoes every day?
  3. Are you male?
  4. Are you getting up in years?
  5. Do you walk barefoot in locker rooms or poolside?
  6.  Do you get pedicures?
  7. Have you ever had athlete’s foot?
  8. Do you have trouble with poor circulation?
  9. Do you hang out with anyone who has fungal toenails?
  10. Do you work in a humid environment?

If you have answered yes to five or more questions, sorry to break it to you, but fungus finds you very attractive!

If you answered yes to 3-4 questions, you are moderately at risk and fungus could definitely take a liking to you.

0-2 yes answers means you are at a low risk, but don’t let your guard down—it doesn’t take much for fungi to forge a friendship!

No matter what your quiz results, you should always take precautions to avoid fungal toenails. Keep feet clean and dry; wear moisture wicking socks and shoes made of breathable materials; wear a pair of shoes every other day to give them time to air out; and never walk barefoot in public areas—especially ones with damp and humid environments (like pools!) You can even go as far as treating your shoes and feet with anti-fungal powder or spray—hey, you can never be too careful!

Of course, if you do notice the tell-tale symptoms listed above, call Dr. David Laurino, Dr. Antonius Su, or Dr. Darick Freestone right away. The sooner you treat the problem, the sooner you can get rid of it. Ignore it, and you risk the fungus growing worse and even spreading.
