Here's to Safe Summer Running

Comments (0)

Protecting Feet While Running in the Summer HeatWhen it's hot outside, summer running can be rough. So before you start sweating, read up on how to beat the heat! Leave that bulky water misting fan behind and check out our tips for staying cool:

  1. Run early in the morning. Not only will it boost your mood for the remainder of the day, but you'll be able to take advantage of one of life's most beautiful gifts—sunrise.

  2. Don’t "save some for the fish.” Even if you're not feeling thirsty, drinking at least 8oz. of water each hour will keep you hydrated and improve your body's natural cooling mechanisms. Oh, and say no to caffeine and alcohol.

  3. Acclimate with care. While your body is adjusting to the extreme heat, keep outdoor sessions to 30 minutes. You'll be ready for longer runs after about two weeks. In the summer months, slow and steady wins the race. The slower your pace, the less likely you’ll overheat.

  4. Keep your clothing loose and light. Light colors will reflect the sun's rays while loose-fitting garments will allow you to take advantage of the breeze. To stay driest, avoid cotton.

  5. Sunscreen! Even on the cloudiest days, harmful rays can damage your skin. Bonus: sunscreen decreases your skin and body temperature!

  6. It’s always cooler near bodies of water. Run along a river, lake, or head for the ocean.

  7. Don't throw caution to the wind. Pay attention to heat warnings. If you're experiencing a headache, loss of muscle control, upset stomach, or dizziness you may be experiencing heat illness. Stop running, find shade, drink water, and seek help.

  8. Catch a break! Some days are going to be too hot and unsafe for running. Don't be afraid to take a day off or keep the exercise indoors.

Summer running under the Arizona sun can be difficult. With a little planning and proper precautions, however, you'll be cooler than a cucumber.
