The human body has an impressive ability to heal itself as it is. Its abilities to restrict blood flow, draw healthy cells to the site of an injury and rebuild tissue almost sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, but they’re a normal part of healthy human function. There are times, however, when our healing process can use a boost to take on a tough task or accomplish its goals more quickly. For this we offer certain treatments: platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and AmnioFix.
PRP injections are a way of taking the body’s own equipment for healing—platelets--and concentrating it where it is needed most. The process takes an amount of your own blood and separates the platelets from it using a centrifuge. This platelet-packed portion is reinjected back into the body at the site of tissue damage, using an ultrasound to pinpoint exactly where it should go.
This treatment can help speed up recovery for conditions such as chronic tendonitis and other causes of long-term pain. It tends to be considered as an option when other treatments have not yielded results.
AmnioFix is often reserved for open diabetic wounds, although it can have other podiatric uses as well. This treatment uses an amniotic membrane, part of placental tissue, to graft over an open wound. This not only provides protection against infection, but also a foundation on which the body’s cells can start building new tissue.
With AmnioFix, wounds that might never have healed on their own now have a higher chance of closing. Healing wounds, in turn, mean a higher chance of returning to normal activities.
PRP injections and AmnioFix are not for everyone. To learn more about these treatments and whether they may be effective for you, contact Advanced Foot & Ankle Specialists of Arizona. Our offices can be reached at (480) 963-9000 for Chandler or (480) 981-1800 for Gilbert.
