Ready for the Blacklight Bubble Party 5k on April 25 in Mesa, Arizona? No messy paint, but you’ll run through zones of colored or black lights, with great music and lots of bubbles to lift your spirits, making this a fun evening run. If you’ve had a nagging pain in your foot, though, have it checked out before your next race. You could be running on a stress fracture, causing more damage every time you head out.
Sometimes you need to look at things in a different light to see what’s really there. You might think that because you can run on it, nothing in your foot could be broken, but that may not be true. Even professional runners may not be able to tell what’s wrong with their feet. Here are some things to look for to determine if you have a stress fracture:
Your pain gets worse the farther you run
Your foot throbs more after you finish, once your endorphin levels subside
Pain is centered at a certain spot, and worsens when you press on that spot
You have swelling on the top of your foot, a pretty good indicator of metatarsal damage
The pain subsides or goes away when you rest
All of these indicate a visit to Advanced Foot & Ankle Specialists of Arizona is in order. We can x-ray your foot to see the damage. Because this break is only a hairline crack on the surface of a bone, we may need to do additional testing to detect it. An MRI is an excellent tool for this, and helps distinguish between fractures and damage to the soft tissues.
Run through the bubbles—not the pain. It is telling you something is wrong, and listening to your body will mean a shorter recovery time if a stress fracture is caught early.
