4 Tips to Keep Your Healthy Living Resolutions

A New Year has come again, bringing with it all those well-meaning resolutions to get in shape or lose weight to generally improve your health. These resolutions are not bad. Everyone benefits from investing in healthy living. The problem is that not many people keep those New Year’s resolutions. Within a few weeks, the vast majority of people give up on their health goals. However, there are ways you can successfully lead a healthy lifestyle for this coming year.

The biggest obstacle for maintaining your New Year’s resolution is how you plan it. Most people make the mistake of declaring something vague, unrealistic, and daunting. If you plan it out, though, you have a much higher chance of attaining your healthy living goals. Say you want to get in better shape this year by exercising more:

  1. Set Specific, Attainable Goals – Vague or impossible goals will discourage you quickly. Don’t just say “get in shape” or “exercise more.” Instead, say you want to lose a reasonable number of pounds by the end of the year through a specific activity, like running or biking.
  2. Create a Plan – Once you know what your big goal is, make a plan that you can stick to. How far will you run or bike each week to start? How about one month in, or two months? What will you do when you take a vacation? Will you change your diet at all?
  3. Consider Smaller Goals – Planning something for the whole year can be overwhelming and may result in you putting off your start date, or quitting early. Make small goals you can reach in a shorter period, like signing up for a 5k in the next month or two that you must train for.
  4. Keep Track and Reward Yourself – Write down your progress so you can see just how far you’ve come when things get tough. This also helps you recognize when you’ve reached a mini-goal so you can reward yourself.
